VMware's debate with Cisco on SDN might finally create a fusion between an SDN view that's all about software and another that's all about network equipment. That would be good for every enterprise considering the cloud and SDN.
I think the challenge with SDN is that modeling, meaning that we have to establish a set of goals for SDN, identify the technical elements that meet those goals, then build something that provides those elements either by developing it discretely or incorporating it from something already done. We have, for SDN, a pretty solid set of "applications" that work inside a data center. Many tell me that these are helpful for very large cloud deployments but probably don't matter much to the average user. We have some projects that offer examples of SDN inside an IP network, but we have no firm approach, and beyond these two areas there's little in the way of an established "service model". Users need the model to align with their benefit cases, and so I think it's critical we have one. I'm not sure it would take a lot of work, but it would take more work than we're putting in!
Fair question, Soozyg. I think that will depend on whether there's a cohesive model of service that crosses the boundaries. IMHO the biggest problem in SDN today is that we're dabbling with packet forwarding instead of defining services. You can't create an SDN service without a service model, and all that stuff it built north of any of the standards today. Without a model, we don't even have the basis for coordinating layers of SDN.
