The anti-virus programs will never give you the peace of mind. They will tell you strange things (like not a genuine Windows). Eat your resource to such an extent that a virus will not have any resource left to run.

The other kind: it will not eat much resource and not kill the viurs, either. Just like a laze security guard.

Qualified staff
These types of issue are unfortuatley indemic in companies that don't have proper staff to accomplish their goals. They need more than just PR...

 I paid for Norton services which slowed down my computer and I still got viruses

@glenbren, I had similar experiences. Norton literally slows down the compter, so I had to un-install Norton Antivirus. I am currently using AVG to scan my computers.

Stop using the Internet, buy a fountain pen, and learn cursive script. Just don't put the pen in your suit pocket during a flight. The change in cabin pressure makes them leak.

So what would you recommend then? I paid for Norton services which slowed down my computer and I still got viruses, one which trashed my hard drive. Other than that, I always used AVG, but it didn't scan automatically and it was slow.

Of course, MS Sec. Essentials wouldn't be a memory hog or interfere with other programs if it didn't do much. As for stopping viruses, it probably would have to replace Windows with Linux for you if it were to really do its job well.

Well it has stopped some viruses on my computer, something Norton couldn't do. It isn't a memory hog, doesn't interfere with other programs, and can be set to scan automatically. It doesn't sound like Avast is a great alternative. Would you recommend something else?

I know. That's the program with the very efficient programing, where there are just two lines. One line prints out "Everything is Okay," and the other line says "Go back to the first line."

I ran a boot-time scan of my computer using Avast! (after making the earlier comment) and it commenced to trash my computer. Now there is a message on the bottom of the screen saying that my copy of Windows isn't genuine. It was genuine yesterday, but today, after the Avast! scan, it magically stopped being genuine.

I haven't had any problems (knock wood) since I started using Microsoft Security Essentials.
