Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
Sitting and talking with Michael Dell. Discussing the importance of creative solutions. Talks about the increase in income with the introduction of cell phones. The way that the unbanked can do well through cell phones.

Also mentiones the "Arab Spring" and the increase in the rights of women around the world.

The take-away from this part is that he's essentially optimistic about the possibilities for the future: The real question is whether we'll grasp the opportunities that are within reach.

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
There's a round of applause when the president sits down to reveal that he's wearing western boots -- boots decorated with a University of Texas logo and name. Playing to the home-town crowd? Noooooo.

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
The HULT Network gives a prize to business school students who create solutions to a particular problem. Last year, it was that photovoltaic panels are a good solution for less developed nations because the non-PV infrastructure doesn't exist.

The winning entry came from New York University in Abu Dhabi, from a very diverse team.

"If we can get back in the tomorrow business we're going to be just fine."

With that, the address ends and we go to Q&A.

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
"None of this will happen unless we figure out a way to have a non-zero sum solution to the problem of identity itself."

He speaks of getting rid of most of our prejudices except one: We don't want to be around anyone who disagrees with us.

"We have got to learn to live with difference and still feel good about ourselves."

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
We have to stay healthier, because we can't afford the cost of being sick. It seems a very simple sort of statement, but it's a solud explanation of why there are motivations for everyone to try to figure out how to solve these problems. Pres, Clinton is a compelling speaker -- not a surprising conclusion to reach with this particular individual.

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
He's now talking about meeting with the heads of soda companies in which he doesn't think they're trying to kill their future customers, but could work together to develop new products that help them retain profits without endangering their future customers.

A creative network of cooperation solved the problem -- not laws, not just the free market.

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
Now, Pres. Clinton is talking about where he has been to see how people can work on projects and get results. Speaking about Tanzania -- a reforestation project with good idea but no systems to support the citizens. Rich societies, he says, have systems but need reform.

"At some point in the development of every society, the systems become more interested in holding on to what they've got than creating the future. More interested in protecting the people that already have wealth than in creating new wealth and opportunities for the future."

Re: DellWorld 2012 Opening Keynote Address
Efficiency is how they did a totally revenue-central carbon tax. The point is, he says, that this is the kind of debate we should have -- what to do, not whether to do anything.

Is UC Becoming Oxymoronic or Just Moronic?

5|9|13   |   2:12   |   No comments

Skype/Outlook UC integration means we're going to have competition and fragmentation of UC client architectures, but is that bad? Modern devices can support IM, email, voice, and video clients, so maybe it's the back end of UC we need to be worried about.

Data/Storage Wish List for Enterprises

Enterprises want three things in storage systems: First is some speech-recognition way of capturing videoconference data for indexing; second is semantic/AI analysis of emails and IM for content indexing; third is a better system for managing hierarchical layers of storage.
