Santa lives in Finland. :)
Birgit,

The real Santa lives in the north of Finland, in Rovaniemi (Lapland) border with the Arctic Circle. There he has his house, his post office where he receives letter from all around the world and it's run by some of Santa's Elves, who help Santa with the lists of what the children want and his workshops.

Santa can afford all those presents because he has his own workshops where his Elves work helping him during the whole year getting all the toys and presents ready for Christmas.

Santa is also there in case children from all ages go to visit his workshops and want a picture with him.

Santa's village is lovely at this time of the year. I was there some years ago, but it was January. Santa's was there, already getting ready for the next Christmas.

Santa has his own Website, of course. :) Here you can read and see everything you need to know about Santa's Village for answering all your 8 year-old son's questions.

And you can always tell him that you know someone who met Santa. :D

What Chimney?
Soon, Ol' St. Nick will have to find a new way to sneak in the house. Many states and communities are implementing building restrictions limiting new construction that include chimneys. With an increasing number of "Spare the Air" days, chimneys are on the path to elimination.

What's a Santa to do? How is he going to make his deliveries? I'm betting on teleportation for the bearded fat man to dematerialize a Wii from his sleigh on the roof and materialize it for Tiny Tim under the tree. Conversely, he can pick up his cookies and milk the same way.

Re: Plausible Explanations for Modern Kids
With the technical solutions we have today, I think these questions are a lot easier to fudge than they were several decades ago!

Well, yes and no... back then we didn't have to worry about Wikipedia or kids Googling, "is Santa real?"

This is a pretty funny article, David, but I'll add that there are likely plenty of people in IT who have similar work conditions as Elves: near slave-like hours, boss who takes all the credit for their work, expected to meet insane deadlines during the holidays, unnecessary dress codes... I could go on and on...

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

Plausible Explanations for Modern Kids
My 8 year-old-son still believes in Santa. He's fairly tech savvy for his age and very inquisitive so it surprises me he is willing to accept my explanations for how one man is able to engineer delivery of presents worldwide in one night or why he would still use flying reindeer. The last couple years he did come to expecting more detailed explanations of how this all works.

I admit NORAD's tracking of Santa helped me out considerably, I mean, they are a legitimate government agency, if they are tracking Santa, he must be up there. But for things like how he affords all those toys and how he remembers who asked for what, I had to make up stuff.

With the technical solutions we have today, I think these questions are a lot easier to fudge than they were several decades ago!

He needs a stealth sleigh
I sure hope Santa's kept up with all the tech. Now if we can just get DoD to give him a stealth sleigh with a red LED nose at the front, we'd be all set.

Is UC Becoming Oxymoronic or Just Moronic?

5|9|13   |   2:12   |   No comments

Skype/Outlook UC integration means we're going to have competition and fragmentation of UC client architectures, but is that bad? Modern devices can support IM, email, voice, and video clients, so maybe it's the back end of UC we need to be worried about.

Data/Storage Wish List for Enterprises

Enterprises want three things in storage systems: First is some speech-recognition way of capturing videoconference data for indexing; second is semantic/AI analysis of emails and IM for content indexing; third is a better system for managing hierarchical layers of storage.
