Cracking the Security Nut Bolsters Hybrid Cloud

Dell and Intel have just published joint findings on cloud sentiment in the North American and EMEA (Europe-Mideast-Africa) markets. More than 370 executives were surveyed, and the results indicate that security remains the No. 1 concern in cloud computing. While security is, of course, a concern to any businesses, research shows a shift in cloud behavior.

In both surveys, security was overwhelmingly the top issue. I think this underscores part of the concerns that organizations have with external providers.

Top cloud concerns NA (n=245)

Top cloud concerns EMEA (n=130)

This level of concern for cloud closely relates to another portion of our study. When asked about "types of cloud computing adoption" being considered, a "pure" public cloud was selected by only 7 percent and 12 percent in NA and EMEA, respectively. I believe the trend to external cloud is becoming more common vis à vis the hybrid cloud path.

In the same question on types of cloud computing adoption we found respondents nearly even in their use of private and hybrid clouds. In EMEA, 40.5 percent opted for private cloud versus 37.8 percent for hybrid. In NA, the gap was closer, with 34.7 percent advocating private cloud versus 35.9 percent for hybrid.

Adopted so far or will adopt in 12 months NA

Adopted or will adopt in 12 months EMEA

Seeing the adoption preference of private and hybrid as almost identical, it would lead one to conclude that organizations have come to grips with security concerns and found ways to accomodate the use of third-party clouds, on their own terms, on their own timelines.

Mark Wood from Dell SecureWorks put it this way:

The security industry's offerings are evolving to address the needs of cloud environments and to deliver effective security regardless of where customer applications and data reside.

Fusing defense-in-depth security capabilities with consumption-based pricing, zero-maintenance service delivery, and a global threat intelligence view -- all of this is 'moving the needle' beyond private datacenters to hybrid cloud usage. And Dell SecureWorks is blazing the trail to secure hybrid cloud environments.

Do you agree that security is becoming less of a concern?

Re: Cloud Security: Come Along Way Yet Still Work to Do
We file this under the heading "if you cannot beat them, join them?" Ironically, security capability is next up-and-coming service in the cloud.  Gartner estimates 10% of security of products will be delivered in the cloud by 2015.

For timebeing, focused around secure email and secure Web gateways, remote vulnerability assessment, and Identity and Access Management (IAM).

Security becoming less of a concern? I hope not.

"come to grips with security concerns and found ways to accomodate the use of third-party clouds...."?

I think this is more accurate. Companies are finalizing realizing how crucial security is and are just figuring out how to adopt the best security that fits their situation.

yes, agree with you,  but this day's I think soon we would see more and more security breaches in the cloud...

Cloud Security: Come Along Way Yet Still Work to Do

Hi Matthew,   Interesting results but based on the recent security breech of LinkedIn, I don't think cloud security is becoming any less a concern for those who have highly sensitive information stored.   I do feel better about Cloud security than I did a year ago, but LinkedIn and Sony remind us that we still have significant work to do on this front.

Is UC Becoming Oxymoronic or Just Moronic?

5|9|13   |   2:12   |   No comments

Skype/Outlook UC integration means we're going to have competition and fragmentation of UC client architectures, but is that bad? Modern devices can support IM, email, voice, and video clients, so maybe it's the back end of UC we need to be worried about.

Data/Storage Wish List for Enterprises

4|3|13   |   2:19   |   1 comment

Enterprises want three things in storage systems: First is some speech-recognition way of capturing videoconference data for indexing; second is semantic/AI analysis of emails and IM for content indexing; third is a better system for managing hierarchical layers of storage.
