Tweet to Buy

American Express is jumping into social selling, and CIOs need to pay attention. Hint: #CIO #AMEX #frictionlessretail #tweetforstuf #personallyIhatehashtags

Seriously, American Express is letting you buy stuff just by Tweeting with the right hashtag. You sync your card with them, and whenever you use certain tags, they process the purchase and send you the goods with no extra muss or bother.

Right now, you can buy American Express gift cards (at a discount) for products from Amazon, Sony, and for the Xbox360. There’s even Donna Karan jewelry. All sent with free two-day shipping.

There are some serious implications to this.

Amex gets serious about social selling
The first thing to consider is whether this is what social selling needed to kick it into high gear. Sure, Pinterest has been very interesting to retailers because people could pin stuff they wanted or liked and it made for a quick way for influencers to promote products. The thing about Pinterest is that it could be a passive process. If you pinned your new favorite car, there wasn’t necessarily a call to action associated with it.

On the other hand, imagine a public tweet that reads: "Just bought Donna Karen’s new diamond bracelet. #braceletx #Amex #spoiledwife #youknowyouwantit"

That might be just enough to get the juices flowing for others to buy the same or similar products. We all know that wanting and buying something aren’t the same thing. The fact that an influencer bought the product, and you saw it in real-time, may be powerful for retailers.

Of course, there are some downsides. Security is obvious. Twitter accounts aren’t known for being the safest of places to sync your American Express card. Let’s say for argument's sake that the security issues are resolved: Do you really want your Twitter account to be as secure as your financial accounts? Are average Twitter users going to want to take the care they should?

Just as important is the issue of cataloguing. With a limited supply of products, the hashtags available won’t be that hard to sort through. But as the products on offer continue to grow, so will the need for unique hashtags. Once you need to go looking for the hashtag to buy the thing you already know you want, it's not a big leap to wonder whether going to Amazon or Sony directly isn’t faster, particularly since Amazon already offers one-click purchasing synced to credit cards.

Still, American Express is making a notable leap, and CIOs need to watch this carefully. If social selling takes another step forward, CIOs (along with CMO partners) need to be ready to respond. Other financial services companies will surely be compelled to follow suit. Retailers will need to find a way to make the purchase a social event.

Can a Tweet about one person buying something inspire another person to also buy it? We don’t know yet. If it can, you'd better be ready to make sure your customers are Tweeting about their purchases.

good marketing strategy
iWow. Now this is something new from  online shopping in a long time. Apart from the obvious security issues, i approve of this new trend of tweeting to buy.
Definitely a tweet from my friends buying something would nspire me. I think that is a very effective marketing strategy  which can really attract the eye of your potential customers.

Re: Not a good idea
@Henrisha   I can help but think this call by AMEx reveals a flaw in another area - analytics.  Some simple surveys would have easily uncovered that most people feel as you and I do about this matter.

Or even worse - the findings were ignored altogether.

@vnewman   I like your philosophy and will certainly consider it moving forward !  : )

Re: Not a good idea
I think there are other ways--better ways--to capitalize on using social media to encourage people to make more purchases. Hashtag shopping just doesn't seem like a very sound system.

Re: Don't Trust The Hash
Same here. I enjoy checking out reviews of stuff before I buy, and reviews about the seller before I purchase from them. Shopping via Twitter isn't appealing at all, at least not to me. It's just not a good enough platform for so many reasons... And the security is horrendous. I don't know what Amex was thinking when they rolled this out.

Re: It is a Joke
@Technocrat - I see what you are saying.  Although I, myself, have been a long time cardholder and have to say I adore the service I get with AMEX - the point system they offer is amazing in my eyes and I have yet to find a card that gives me the same kind of benefits.

I put every single thing I ever buy on that card - you can even pay your taxes with it - at one time I even paid my rent with it.  Then I just pay it off at the end of the month.  So, if you use it for everything, it is easy to qualify for a "status" card.  And I must say, the perks are addictive.

Is there another card that offers the same or better?  If so, I'd love to know...my feeling is "Ask not what you can do for your credit card company; ask what your cc co can do for you."

Re: Not a good idea
I'm not sure I would ever use this service either but I think it is pretty clear that AMEX is trying to capitalize on what they see as a potentially massive means of viral marketing. It's just word of mouth really - so it doesn't really surprise me.  People love their twitter and it could catch on...who knows at this point.

And regarding security - if someone steals your AMEX card number this way, well, AMEX won't make you pay for the purchase anyway.  They never do.

Re: It is a Joke
@vnewman   There are many aspects to that question of course, but I have many of the concerns expressed by Susan.  Since it's creation AMEX has sought to build exclusivity to it's brand.  Only those doing well ( exceedingly in many cases ) can even think about applying for the card, and I have seen those who have it  have their self worth and identity rapped up in the color of the card.

I find it ironic that after years of building a brand they would cheapen it by using something I would consider gimmicky - hashtag based buying.

Some companies that want to appear above the crowd should actually practice what they preach.

Don't Trust The Hash
Personally I prefer the Amazon model. I like looking at the customer reviews because they seem to be the most legitimate. Tweeting purchases just strikes me as yet another cheesy marketing trick much like the "reviews" you read on the infomercial product sites:::plants. Twitter has been tweeting promotions since it started and it is the price you pay for the free app. But seeing these Amex tweets is really for the birds.

Social selling will be Big
Big I tells ya, BIG!

The ability to take advantage of the impulse buy is something all retailers, marketers and builders of e-commerce systems desire. I don't see how this is any less secure than doing transactions online anyway.

There are some Twitter scraping tools out there that will let you know who is #tagging what...so theoretically someone could find out who is buying what and how they are buying it. If there was a vulnerability, it should stand to reason that this would be one way to target those people.

Skype/Outlook UC integration means we're going to have competition and fragmentation of UC client architectures, but is that bad? Modern devices can support IM, email, voice, and video clients, so maybe it's the back end of UC we need to be worried about.
