Geekend: Who Should Play Han Solo?David Wagner, Managing Editor | 2/8/2013 |
Geeks everywhere received an excellent gift this week when Disney announced that, in addition to another trilogy, it is planning to make standalone movies for Star Wars characters. It was originally rumored that the first of these films would be a Yoda movie. Thankfully, the studio realized 90 minutes of backward talking would cause people to yearn for a Jar Jar Binks movie instead. Disney is reportedly planning movies for Han Solo and Boba Fett. The Solo movie would take place between the third and fourth episodes of the first six Star Wars movies. Frankly, I'm bummed. Not that Disney is making a Han Solo movie. That sounds awesome. I'm bummed that there is probably no way Harrison Ford could reprise his role. I would have rather had the movie follow an older Solo, so Ford could bring his considerable charm to the role. List of actors who could play Han Solo Since this is Disney, you've got to expect that it will pick one of the young stars from its own stable. Could it choose Zac Efron of High School Musical fame? He's the right age, and here he is sporting a black leather vest, which, as we know, will be required to play Solo. Nah. Efron's too much of a pretty boy. Another pretty boy is the hottest guy in Hollywood right now: Ryan Gosling. Here he is talking about how much he loves Disney, which couldn't hurt his chances of getting the role. Of course, Gosling is blonde and a little too buff, and he lets George Clooney wet his pants. That's not very Han-like. Speaking of George Clooney, what about him for the role? He's probably too old, but he is ruggedly handsome. He's a huge star, and if he said he wanted to do it, who would say no? While we're talking about Clooney, what about his friend Brad Pitt? And you can get Angelina Jolie to play the woman Solo loved before meeting Princess Leia. Who wouldn't go see that? Yeah, never mind. How about Taylor Lautner? He's one of the stars of one of the world's biggest film franchises. He's got legions of young fans that Disney wants to draw. And he kind of kicks butt. Here he is as a kid. Right, we're not picking Lautner. No actor should have the characters Shark Boy and Han Solo on the same resume. Ultimately, we need someone with real gravitas. I can think of only one actor in Hollywood I personally would consider: Hugh Jackman. He can play the tough but vulnerable character that Solo really is. He's funny and handsome, and he can play a physical role. He's well liked and young enough. The only problem: Do you really want Han Solo to be able to do this? Frankly, I'm stumped. Jeremy Renner? Daniel Craig? E2 community, I put it to you. Who should play Han Solo? Leave your suggestions in the comment field below. While you're at it, leave a suggestion for who should play the inevitable love interest. Tell us which other Star Wars characters you'd love to see get their own movies. Luke? Jar Jar? Uncle Owen? The stormtrooper who should have known those were the droids he was looking for? Inquiring minds (or at least geeky ones) want to know.
